In Duncanville, making room for the arts may mean looking at a familiar place differently.

oddspace is a Duncanville Arts Foundation initiative that turns underused, overlooked, and unexpected spaces across town into temporary places for the arts. The Foundation brings together artists, property owners, and local partners to create programs in spaces that weren’t built to hold them.

The setting becomes part of the experience. In a small café, the audience might sit only a few feet from the performers. A vacant shop becomes a gallery people can visit on their way to something else. Each program gives people a reason to spend time in a place they might otherwise pass by.

These temporary programs also give the Foundation a practical way to learn what can succeed here before making longer commitments. Through our Cultural Interest Study, we track attendance, ticket sales, spending, and whether people return. We account for the cost of producing each program, including paying the artists, so we know what it would take to continue.

What works stays.

That means developing programs with an audience and the financial support to carry on. They may return to the same space, move around town, or eventually find a permanent home. Others will be revised or brought to a close, with what we learn informing the next program.

Over time, oddspace could become a familiar part of life in Duncanville: a café that hosts opera, a storefront known for its exhibitions, a courtyard where friends meet for a film.
